As we head towards a return to face to face Scouting we are looking forward to events that will happen in the forthcoming year.
Subject to Scout Framework rules, the Marathon Hike will take place over the 18th and 19th September 2021. This hike will be open to all members and we will be encouraging all Sections and Groups to take part by simply going for a walk. We have a set route for the event and this route will go through every District within Northamptonshire.
Younger members will do a shorter hike and some of our older members including adults may try a longer hike. This hike can be anywhere in Northamptonshire and participants will be able to obtain a badge and a certificate for taking part.
Every person taking part will collect a point for being involved i.e. taking part but additional points will be available for passing by one of our nine churches hence the 9C. So a young person or adult doing a hike over either the 18th or 19th September will gain 1 point. If the person passes one of our nine churches they gain another point so the maximum number of points anybody can collect is 11 points (hiking on both days and passing all nine churches). There will be prizes for the Section, Group and District that collectively gains the most points. We envisage that our younger members may collect two or three points whereas our older members and adults may indeed complete the full route (52 miles) over two days and collect 11 points.
The churches are:
The nine churches are being used as a navigational feature - something that you can see in the distance and know where you are heading. You will not be going inside any church. It's being used as an eye catching feature that can be seen for many miles and is represented on our brilliant Ordnance Survey maps as featured on our striking Marathon Hike logo and badge.
It may sound complicated but it really isn’t - all we are asking every Section to do is go for a walk over the 18th and/or 19th September 2021. We would like as part of your programme in July and September that you think about doing one or more of the Navigator Badges. Most of all we want you to think about going on a hike with your young people in September and we want you to get as much publicity for this as possible in your local area. This is what we do - we go outdoors and take part in an Adventure.
At this point all we would ask you to do is think about if you want to take part? And we really, really hope that you will
Download an expression of interest form that we would ask you to send back to me. This does no more than register your Sections interest and I will then have details of where I can send further information to.
At this current time this event could not happen, but we need to now look forward and believe that by September it will be permitted and this will be a major step in getting us out and telling the world that Scouting is still here and doing what we do best - encouraging young people to be Outdoors and having their own Adventures.
