Northampton Emergency Aid Team was formed in 1976 after severe storms thrashed Northamptonshire. After discussions with the Emergency Services it was decided that a trained team of young people would be able to assist the emergency services should they need extra resources at a major incident.
So Venture Scout Leaders (now Explorer Scouts) from Northampton District started recruiting members for the team from Northampton Venture Scout Units. They underwent training during the winter of 1976. The team became operational from April 1977.
The team started with a Ford Transit Equipment Vehicle but it soon clear that an Ambulance would be more appropriate as the team were starting to carry out more and more, First Aid events both Scouting and Public Events. The Team’s first Ambulance was purchased with a grant from the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Fund in 1978.
Since then the team has grown, we have 2 A&E capable Ambulances, 1 4X4 support vehicle. We also own a ‘Mass Casualty’ Air Shelter which can be fully operational as a treatment area within 15 minutes!
